Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16)—Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions—promotes peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice, and accountable, transparent institutions. These are the foundations of social stability, economic growth, and human rights.
A Global Governance Gap
Violence, corruption, weak rule of law, and limited civic participation erode trust in institutions and inhibit development. In 2022 alone, more than 100 million people were forcibly displaced due to conflict, persecution, or disaster (UNHCR, 2023). Many still lack access to fair justice systems.
From Fragility to Resilience
SDG 16 calls for reducing all forms of violence, ending exploitation and trafficking, protecting fundamental freedoms, and ensuring responsive, inclusive decision-making. Peace and justice are not abstract ideals—they are practical enablers of sustainable development.
