Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6)—Clean Water and Sanitation—seeks to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Yet 2.2 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water, and 3.5 billion lack safely managed sanitation (UNICEF/WHO, 2023).
Unsafe water contributes to disease, poor hygiene, and high child mortality. In many regions, women and children must walk long distances to collect water—time that could be spent in school or employment.
Climate change, pollution, and poor infrastructure threaten the sustainability of water resources worldwide (United Nations, 2022).
Solving the water crisis requires not only government infrastructure investment but also community involvement, private innovation, and global partnerships. Access to water is a prerequisite for education, health, and gender equity—making it central to many other SDGs.
