SDG 2 – Zero Hunger: Ending Food Insecurity in a World of Plenty

Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2)—Zero Hunger—calls for an end to hunger and all forms of malnutrition, alongside the promotion of sustainable agriculture. Despite global food production being sufficient to feed everyone, 735 million people still experience chronic hunger (FAO, 2023).

Food Insecurity and Inequality

Hunger is not just about food scarcity. It is about inequality, access, and instability. Climate change, conflict, economic shocks, and fragile supply chains continue to drive up food insecurity. Women and children are disproportionately affected, particularly in rural and conflict-affected areas (UNDP, 2023; WFP, 2023).

Food insecurity also exists in wealthy nations, often hidden in urban communities with limited access to fresh, nutritious food.

Building Resilience Through Collaboration

Solutions lie in local food systems, sustainable farming, technology, and education. Governments, businesses, non-profits, and international agencies must work together to ensure long-term access to affordable, safe, and nutritious food (United Nations, 2022).

Private sector involvement—from reducing food waste to supporting smallholder farmers—has become increasingly vital to driving food system transformation.
